Michigan Alliance for Student Opportunity calls for increased funding to boost Michigan’s students

LANSING, Mich. – Peter Spadafore, executive director of the Michigan Alliance for Student Opportunity (The Alliance), issued the following statement following the release of a new report from the Education Law Center showing the need for a significant funding increase for Michigan’s schools:

“This report is yet another wakeup call that we need to act now to adequately fund our schools and invest in our future. Multiple studies over the years have all found that Michigan’s schools lack adequate funding to meet our students’ needs. By looking at funding adequacy at the individual district level, this new report brings the issue into clear view just how much work needs to be done. 90% of Michigan students attend districts that are underfunded.

“Decades of collective failure to give our students the resources they need for success must be addressed. We need to seriously invest in our students and schools as the legislature prepares the state budget while also looking toward long-term structural changes that make our system for funding schools adequate and more equitable.”
